Documents Required to Rent a Car in Dubai: The Tourist’s Checklist

The documents required to rent a car in Dubai as a tourist are straightforward, but showing up with the wrong combination is the single most common reason pickup gets delayed. Tourists are welcome to rent and drive in Dubai — you do not need a UAE licence — yet every rental company must follow RTA rules, and those rules are strict. This checklist covers exactly what to prepare before you fly, what happens at pickup, and the mistakes that slow first-timers down.

The Three Documents Every Tourist Needs

If you are visiting Dubai on a tourist visa, you need all three of these — no exceptions:

  • Passport — your original passport with a valid visit visa or entry stamp. Copies and photos on your phone are not enough; the original must be presented at pickup.
  • Visit visa — the entry permit or visa-on-arrival stamp that proves you are a tourist, not a resident. Residents must hold a UAE driving licence instead (see below).
  • Home country driving licence — a valid, unexpired licence from your home country. For many nationalities an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required alongside it — check the section below.

Prepare these three before your trip and the paperwork at pickup takes a few minutes. Turn up without one of them and the rental cannot legally start.

Do Tourists Need an International Driving Permit?

This is the question that confuses visitors most. Many nationalities can drive in Dubai with just their home licence, while others must carry an International Driving Permit alongside it. The rule of thumb: if your licence is in English and from a country on the UAE’s approved list, your home licence alone is usually accepted. If your licence is not in English, an IDP translation is effectively mandatory.

The safe move is to get an IDP before you travel. It is inexpensive, takes one application at your local automobile association, and removes all doubt at the counter. Some companies will not hand over keys without it, even for nationalities where it is technically optional — do not let an avoidable detail stall your first day in Dubai.

Minimum Age and Licence Validity Rules

Most rental companies in Dubai, including ours, require drivers to be at least 21 years old (some premium and sports cars require 25). Your driving licence must also have been held for a minimum period — typically one year — so a licence issued last month may be rejected for high-value cars. Check with us on WhatsApp before booking if you are a young or newly licensed driver; we will tell you honestly what you can drive.

What Happens at Pickup

On arrival day the process is quick when your documents are in order:

  • Document check: We verify your originals — passport, visa, licence (and IDP if applicable) — and take copies for the rental agreement.
  • Rental agreement: You sign the contract, which covers the rental period, mileage terms and the damage/deposit policy. Read it once; it takes two minutes and avoids all later confusion.
  • Deposit hold: A refundable security deposit is blocked on your credit card. It is released after the car returns clean, with no fines pending.
  • Walk-around inspection: We inspect the car together and note every existing mark on a condition report, with photos. Keep your copy — it is your proof at return.

The whole handover takes about fifteen minutes. See our DXB airport pickup guide if you are landing at Dubai International and want the car waiting on arrival.

Common Mistakes That Delay Pickup

After years of handing over cars to visitors, these are the four errors we see every week:

  • Phone photos instead of originals. A picture of your licence is not a licence. Bring every document physically (or present originals at the office).
  • Expired or soon-expiring licence. The licence must be valid for the entire rental period. Check the expiry date before you fly.
  • Wrong visa status. A tourist on a visit visa needs the home licence; a UAE resident needs a UAE licence. Switching status mid-trip is the classic trap for people on visa changes.
  • Forgetting the IDP. If your licence is not in English, no IDP usually means no car — and the airport counter cannot issue one for you.

Renting as a UAE Resident vs a Tourist

Worth clarifying once, because it catches people out: if you hold a UAE residence visa, you must drive on a UAE driving licence — your home licence and IDP are not valid for rental once you are a resident. Tourists on visit visas are the only group that rents on foreign licences. If you are mid-transition between visas, tell us in advance so we book you at the right point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a car in Dubai with a digital copy of my passport?

No. The original passport must be presented at pickup. Digital copies are fine for the booking enquiry, but the handover requires the physical document.

Does my spouse need the same documents as an additional driver?

Yes — every named driver on the agreement must present the same three documents: passport, visit visa and valid licence (plus IDP where required).

Can I rent if my licence was issued less than a year ago?

Possibly for standard cars, but premium and sports cars usually require a licence held for at least one year. Ask us before booking and we will confirm honestly.

Do I get the deposit back if there are no fines or damage?

Yes — the refundable deposit hold is released after the car is returned and the standard fine-clearance window passes. Any traffic fines you incurred are deducted first, per the agreement you sign.

Ready When Your Documents Are

Get the three documents in order and the rest is easy. Most of our tourists message us on WhatsApp a day or two before landing — we confirm the documents, agree the car, and the pickup takes minutes. Families landing with luggage often choose the Nissan Patrol for space, while first-timers wanting the full Dubai experience usually go for the Mercedes-AMG G63. Whatever you drive, bring originals — and enjoy Dubai.

Policy note: travel to Oman and off-road driving are not allowed with our rental cars.
